A FEW THINGS HAPPENED IN '66

Cost of Living:

Did you remember that a gallon of milk cost only (ONLY!) $1.11 in 1966?

A loaf of bread 22 cents?  A new car $2,410?  Or a gallon of gas 23 cents?

New homes averaged 40K (won't do a down payment nowadays)

And, to top it all off...average income was about $6000! Sucks!

All in all, $100 in '66 bucks is equal to $546 today! (At that rate in 40 years our 80th reunion should cost about --Let's see now--$468!  So, start saving!

Politics:

Remember who was President?  Lyndon Johnson (first and last elected term) Hubert Humphrey was his vice-pres.

Ron Hellekson was EHS 1966 President (elected officers were Evelyn Bowen, Tom Murray & Jill Beebe)

Charlie Denny presided over our high school

Headlines from '66:

John Lennon claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus

The first lunar orbiter was launched

Charles Whitman killed 12 people with a rifle from a tower of Texas Univ.

LSD was officially outlawed in California (ouch)

Ron Reagan was elected Gov of California

Cassius Clay converted to Islam and became Muhammed Ali

Xerox marketed the very first fax machine

Leonid Brezhnev becomes the Soviet leader

The miniskirt was the rage (I miss those days)

Frank Sinatra marries Mia Farrow in Vegas

Deaths: Lenny Bruce, CS Forester, Montgomery Clift, Buster Keaton, Walt Disney

Sports:

EHS Basketball ended the season 6 & 4 (Jim Foss averaged 21.7 points a game)

Baltimore pounded the Dogers in the Series 4 wins to 0

Boston beat the Lakers in Basketball (4-3)

Kentucky Derby winner was Kauai King

Notre Dame/Michigan St. tied for NCAA football championship

The first "Super Bowl" in '67 was played (for the 1966 season) Green Bay beat KC

Entertainment:

Bestsellers were Valley of the Dolls (Fiction) & How to Avoid Probate & Human Sexual Response & In Cold Blood (Non-Fiction)

Academy Awards to: "A Man for All Seasons" best picture, Paul Scofield, Actor for same picture, Liz Taylor--Best Actress for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf",  Best song award: "Born Free"

Top Songs of the year 1966:

    Sound of Silence  --  We Can Work It Out -- These Boots are Made for Walkin' -- Monday, Monday -- Ballad of the Green Berets -- When a Man Loves a Woman -- Hanky Panky -- Wild Thing -- Summer in the City -- Cherish -- Winchester Cathedral -- and the EHS Fight Song (just to name a few...)

There were approximately 322 students in our Senior Class (1966)
